Sahibzada Farhan Handed Pakistan Captaincy for 2026 Asian Games Campaign

Pakistan announced a new angle ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, appointing veteran batter Sahibzada Farhan as men’s cricket team captain for the multi-sport competition due to be hosted later this year in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The inclusion raises eyebrows towards a deviation from strategy, as the team management has opted for a blend of fresh faces along with few who have had their share of filling in records in International cricket. Farhan (46 T20I) will be captaining the national side for the first time in a major tournament. He has been around the white-ball setup in Pakistan for a number of years, but this is his first international assignment as captain.

Abdul Samad serves as vice-captain and will back Farhan for the entire campaign. Samad is relatively inexperienced at international level, having played only five T20Is, but his return into Pakistan’s ODI set-up bodes well for the selectors’ future plans for him.

There are four uncapped players in the T20I squad which is one of the big points about this team. Despite not having played a T20 International yet, Akif Javed, Ali Raza, Maaz Sadaqat and Saad Masood have all received opportunities to put forward their skills on a big stage. The patches in their selections reflect the intent of the Pakistan management to find out both a better-honed team and rookies for even more future tasks.

Usman Khan has taken the gloves and will also be a vital cog in the batting order. It also includes newcomers Saim Ayub, Abrar Ahmed and some other young names such as Haider Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Arafat Minhas and Sufyan Moqim.

What is more surprising is that Pakistan is without some regular established players with the team without a host of stars who have recently been dropped. They have not picked their regular captain Salman Ali Agha or any star players from white-ball Cricket , Babar,Azam,Shaheen Afridi and Shahab khan.

Pakistan will be looking to hammer home their advantage and put in a strong performance under new management with a young, ambitious group heading to Japan for the Asian Games in hope of replicating another unforgettable campaign.
