Leicestershire Foxes secured their first home victory of the season in any format with a hard-fought 12-run win against North Group leaders Yorkshire in the Vitality Blast at Grace Road. The triumph ended a frustrating run on home soil and was powered by a decisive spell from England leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed.
After being asked to bat first, Leicestershire posted a competitive total of 147 for 8 despite suffering a middle-order collapse. New Zealand batter Nick Kelly played a key role with a well-constructed 44, helping the Foxes recover after an uncertain start. However, Yorkshire fought back strongly through Pakistan pacer Hassan Ali, who delivered an outstanding spell of 4 for 18, his best bowling figures since joining the county.
Leicestershire appeared in trouble after slipping from 90 for 2 to 96 for 6, but wicketkeeper Ben Cox held the innings together with an unbeaten 33. His late contribution ensured the hosts reached a total that ultimately proved enough.
Yorkshire began their chase confidently, with captain Jonny Bairstow leading the charge. The experienced opener smashed 39 from just 21 deliveries and gave his side early momentum. Will Luxton also impressed with a fluent 38 as Yorkshire looked well on course for victory.
At 100 for 3, the visitors required only 48 runs from 44 balls and seemed firmly in control. However, the match turned dramatically when Leicestershire’s bowlers sparked a stunning collapse. Rehan Ahmed was at the heart of the comeback, claiming three crucial wickets with his leg-spin and disrupting Yorkshire’s middle order.
Luxton became the first victim of the collapse before Rehan played a direct role in the run-out of Moeen Ali. Wickets then continued to tumble as Yorkshire lost seven wickets for just 35 runs, turning a comfortable chase into a nightmare.
The Foxes maintained pressure in the closing overs, and Yorkshire’s lower order failed to recover. The innings eventually ended at 135, leaving the visitors 12 runs short of the target.
The victory was a significant boost for Leicestershire, while Yorkshire suffered a rare setback despite remaining at the top of the North Group standings. Rehan Ahmed’s match-winning performance proved decisive in one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the season.
