Bangladesh all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain had a memorable return to international cricket against Australia after years of persistence and determination finally bore fruit.
Mosaddek was out of the national set-up for almost four years, getting one after another disappointment. Even her reliability and performance in domestic cricket failed to fetch her a shot at the highest level regularly. The repeated snubs under former chief selector Minhazul Abedin tried his patience. Subsequently, chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain made remarks that Mosaddek would have little chance of a comeback as long as ODI captain Mehidy Hasan remained in the squad.
In Mosaddek’s circumstance, plenty of players would have given up but he did otherwise. He did not immediately throw in the towel and set about taking his game to another level, letting his performance do the talking. He was cemented as a key player this year in the Dhaka Premier League, where he was one of Abahani Limited’s top performers.
In six innings at an exceptional average of 77.50, the right-handed batter recorded a total of 310 runs with a strike rate of 129.17. Among his achievements with the bat were a hundred and two fifties. Apart from this batting brilliance, he also proved to be an useful off-spinner and took 12 wickets in the tournament.
Those performances ultimately became so good that it was impossible for the selectors not to take notice again. A recall to the Bangladesh ODI squad for the Australia series provided him an opportunity to restart his career internationally.

Mosaddek made it a point to not let the opportunity go in vain.
Highest run scorer for Bangladesh in the series (157 runs), display of composure with intent under pressure. Apart from his batting, he also played a role with the ball taking two important wickets to keep his side in a game against a dominant Australian line-up.
His comeback story is a testament of how you can rise from one of the darkest times as long you put in endeavour and believe that it will all work out eventually. This means that after years of doubt and disappointment, Mosaddek has once again broken into the upper echelons of Bangladesh cricket’s hierarchy – persistence, it seems does pay off.
