Cricket Canada has launched an extensive reform program after the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended its associate membership over serious governance and financial compliance concerns. The organization has already submitted a detailed corrective action plan to the ICC and is working toward a swift restoration of its membership status.
The ICC announced the suspension earlier this week, citing significant breaches of membership obligations. The decision followed a compliance review that reportedly uncovered weaknesses in governance structures, financial oversight, and administrative procedures within the national cricket body.
The suspension comes after a turbulent period for Cricket Canada. Much of the scrutiny stemmed from the appointment of former chief executive Salman Khan, whose selection had previously raised concerns due to undisclosed criminal charges. Khan was later removed from his position and has since faced theft and fraud charges filed by Calgary Police, allegations he has denied.
In response to the crisis, Cricket Canada recently elected a new leadership team headed by board president Arvinder Khosa. The newly formed nine-member board insists that most of the issues highlighted by the ICC originated before the current administration took office.
Chief Operating Officer Bhavjit Jauhar stated that the majority of governance and financial concerns were linked to historical practices and decisions made before the April and May board elections. He emphasized that the current leadership is committed to implementing reforms and ensuring full compliance with ICC standards.
As part of its recovery strategy, Cricket Canada has established an independent investigation committee led by lawyer Dasha Peregoudova. The committee has been granted unrestricted access to financial records, staff, and organizational documents. It is expected to deliver preliminary recommendations within two weeks and a comprehensive report within 45 days.
The organization is also facing ongoing anti-corruption investigations related to Canada’s match against New Zealand at the 2026 T20 World Cup, as well as separate allegations involving former coaching staff and player selection practices.
Despite describing the ICC suspension as unexpected, Cricket Canada has pledged full cooperation with the governing body. The board is now expected to work closely with the ICC’s normalization committee to address concerns, strengthen oversight mechanisms, and secure the reinstatement of Canada’s membership in international cricket.
