The Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) begins a thrilling new chapter in 2026 when Jamaica Empress are welcomed to join the league’s other three franchises. The expansion is the first since the launch of the tournament in 2022 and highlights how women’s cricket across the Caribbean is developing and growing.
It will the fourth team to appear in every season of competition alongside Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders, while Jamaica Empress will be further added to the mix. This experience is anticipated to expand and generate more opportunities for players but also heighten the desire for more competitiveness in the tournament.
The 2026 WCPL season is scheduled to be held between September 5 and September 17, with all matches being played in Barbados. Each of the four teams will then face each other once in a round-robin league phase. The team that finishes first will gain a direct slot in the final. Otherwise, it will be a playoff between the teams that finished second and third to figure out who advances as the other finalist.
Defending champions Barbados Royals will enter the tournament aiming to continue their remarkable dominance. The Royals have established themselves as the benchmark of the competition by winning the last three titles consecutively in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Their impressive run has made them the team to beat heading into the new season.
Trinbago Knight Riders remain the only other franchise to lift the trophy, having claimed the inaugural championship in 2022. Guyana Amazon Warriors and the newly formed Jamaica Empress will be eager to challenge the established order and make their mark.
The expansion to four teams could be just the beginning of the tournament’s evolution. Organisers have already hinted at ambitious plans for the future, with discussions underway to invite teams from outside the Caribbean from 2027 onward. Such a move could transform the WCPL into a truly international competition and further elevate the profile of women’s cricket across the globe.
With a new franchise, a revised format, and global aspirations, the 2026 WCPL promises to be its most exciting edition yet.
