Green light for Devonshire and othersNew Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced its women’s central contract list for the 2026 – 27 season, with newcomers Flora Devonshire and Nensi Patel, in addition to Izzy Sharp being awarded full-time contracts. The three replace experienced heads Suzie Bates, Lauren Down and Lea Tahuhu as the White Ferns usher in another new era.
The most recent contracts reflect an evolving national team. Also missing from the contracted group is Sophie Devine, who donned a casual playing agreement last season. Down retired from international cricket last year, and Bates, Tahuhu and Devine are tipped to retire from the longest format after the next Women’s T20 World Cup.
Central Players of Interest is the NZC programme to groom the brightest of national ambitions, both Devonshire and Sharp having progressed through it. Central Districts left-handed batting all-rounder began international career March 2025 and has had two World Cup squads. She has made an impression on the coaches with her ability to do damage with bat and left-arm spin.

Earlier in the day Patel’s return to the contracted list came after a brilliant international debut. The Northern Districts spin-bowling all-rounder was a central contract proposal for 2022-23, and among New Zealand’s top T20I performers of the year. Patel made her debut in February, has taken 14 wickets at an incredible average of 9.8 and with an economy rate just over four runs-per-over since debuting for the national team in February. Her attention-grabbing figures of 4 for 18 against Bangladesh in a Women’s T20 World Cup warm-up match also helped.
Booming batter Izzy Sharp meanwhile continues her fast – track rise. The cricketer, who was born in Timaru but moved to Wellington before her first birthday, led New Zealand at the first Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023 and had a strong domestic season with Canterbury Magicians finishing as Canterbury’s top-run scorer in the 2025-26 Super Smash competition.
Devonshire’s power, Patel’s consistency with the ball and Sharp’s ‘explosive’ batting potential are a few key lessons Ben Sawyer learned about the trio from observations centered around their performances. New Zealand, on the other hand, seem intent upon ensuring there is a talented core of players in place to take the White Ferns into a new era as experienced stars near retirement.
