Essex continued their impressive run in the 2026 Vitality Blast with a convincing 60-run win over Middlesex at Merchant Taylors’ School. The victory marked Essex’s third consecutive success, while Middlesex suffered their fifth defeat in six matches.
After being asked to bat first, Essex faced early setbacks when they lost both Paul Walter and Michael Pepper with only 26 runs on the board. However, Charlie Allison and Luc Benkenstein steadied the innings with a brilliant partnership worth 133 runs from just 91 deliveries.
Benkenstein played a composed knock of 67 from 56 balls, including two sixes, while Allison followed up his recent good form with a fluent 61 off only 37 deliveries. The pair accelerated strongly in the second half of the innings, putting pressure on the Middlesex bowlers and guiding Essex to a competitive total of 176 for 5.
Despite some disciplined bowling from Tom Helm and Noah Cornwell, Middlesex struggled to contain the Essex batters during the crucial middle overs. Helm eventually removed Benkenstein with an excellent caught-and-bowled effort, while Allison fell to a well-executed yorker from Seb Morgan.
In response, Middlesex never managed to build momentum. Shane Snater struck early by dismissing Adam Rossington without scoring, and the home side quickly found themselves under pressure. Zaman Akhter then delivered a key spell, claiming two wickets in four balls to leave Middlesex reeling.
The chase became increasingly difficult as wickets continued to fall. Noah Thain produced a career-best performance, taking 3 wickets for just 11 runs and further damaging Middlesex’s hopes. Wiaan Mulder also contributed with an important breakthrough as Essex maintained complete control.
Ryan Higgins offered some resistance with a fighting 36 and hit a couple of sixes, but he lacked support from the other end. Middlesex eventually collapsed for 116, well short of their target.
The emphatic victory strengthens Essex’s position in the competition and highlights their growing confidence, while Middlesex face mounting pressure to reverse their poor run of form.
